The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) John L. Berg (ASN: 0-1051872), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 26 January 1945, near Schweighausen, France. Volunteering to lead a rescue party across two hundred yards of open terrain to a wounded man who lay exposed to direct enemy observation, Lieutenant Berg worked his way under heavy fire through the snow to the man’s side. Placing the wounded man on a litter, the party returned across the open field, successfully evacuating the man under continual enemy fire. Later in the day Lieutenant Berg was mortally wounded while leading his platoon in the defense of its position against a strong enemy attack. His outstanding courage and devotion to duty were responsible for saving a fellow soldier from possible death or capture.
