Headquarters, 42d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 4 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) George A. Carroll (ASN: 0-378793), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 2d Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division. On 7 January 1945, at Gambsheim, France, Lieutenant Carroll, while directing the attack of his company and other troops, directed a number of tanks supporting the attack into positions from which their fire would be effective against enemy machine gun positions. To accomplish this it became necessary for him to ride on top of several tanks in the face of severe enemy fire. While so doing, he observed wounded men lying in the path of the tanks and directed them around the men. During this action, Lieutenant Carroll sustained a severe injury to his hand, in spite of which he remained in combat for two days. Later, while under fire, he rendered first aid to the wounded and dispatched litter bearers where needed.
