On 6 January 1945, at Gambsheim, France, after leading his squad in an attack on the railroad station, Staff Sergeant Wickware was wounded in the elbow and thigh by mortar fire, as a result of which he was rendered unable to walk. Notwithstanding his wounds, and while under constant enemy fire, he deployed his squad, then crawled to a wounded soldier and administered first aid, paying no attention to his own wounds until arrival of an aid man to take care of the wounded.
