Headquarters, 42d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 4 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Dallas B. Hartwell (ASN: 0-550581), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division. On 6 January 1945 when his platoon was caught by enemy fire without any cover Lieutenant Hartwell remained in an exposed position in order to direct the remainder of his platoon to the cover of a wall of a nearby building and from this exposed position directed counter-fire against the enemy. While so doing, Lieutenant Hartwell was wounded and removed to the vicinity of a railroad station but because of the presence of enemy artillery and infantry it became necessary for him to be left behind, and he has been missing in action. By his bravery, courage and leadership his platoon was able to accomplish its mission.
