The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class James H. Trail (ASN: 33762415), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 222d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division. On 6 January 1945, near Ingolsheim, France, Private Trail voluntarily carried ammunition and rations to the men of his platoon in their foxholes on the outpost line of resistance in the face of enemy small arms, mortar, and artillery fire, as a result of which his platoon was enabled to withstand attacks by enemy infantry and tanks and, when ordered to withdraw, to do so without loss.
