The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant John J. Strack (ASN: 37621356), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 232d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 23 April 1945, near Dockingen, Germany. As platoon leader, Sergeant Strack led his platoon through heavy enemy fire in the attack on Dockingen after he had been wounded in the foot. On reaching the outskirts of the town he was wounded again, but continued to direct the advance until loss of blood necessitated his evacuation. By his outstanding courage and devotion to duty, Sergeant Strack was responsible for the capture of the town and the capture of numerous prisoners.
