The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Wendell Grant Van Auken (ASN: 0-26269), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 232d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 23 April 1945 near Dockingen, Germany. As Lieutenant Van Auken’s company approached their objective, they encountered intense small arms fire. While his men sought cover Lieutenant Van Auken remained upright and moved along the front urging them forward, at times advancing beyond the leading elements of his company. As a result of his example his men left cover followed him forward and over ran the enemy. By his outstanding courage and leadership, Lieutenant Van Auken was responsible for the capture of Dockingen. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
