The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Sherman I. Jowell (ASN: 6289807), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 232d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 23 April 1945, near Dockingen, Germany. When his platoon leader was wounded in the attack on Dockingen, Sergeant Jewell immediately assumed command of the platoon and in the face of withering enemy fire led his platoon against the enemy positions, knocking out a machine gun, lead the attack into the city, wiping out several strong points. His gallantry and devotion to duty were directly responsible for the success of the platoon assault, enabling the company to move in and occupy the city.
