The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Russell E. Chappell (ASN: 0-1332467), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 232d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 23 April 1945, near Dockingen, Germany. While Lieutenant Chappell was leading his rifle platoon in an attack on the enemy’s right flank at Dockingen, he encountered intense machine gun and rifle fire which pinned the unit down. Upon seeing his men hit the ground in exposed positions, he charged toward the enemy positions, shouting and encouraging his men to follow him. Inspired by Lieutenant Chappell’s outstanding courage and aggressiveness, his men got up and followed him in a successful assault on the enemy positions.
