Headquarters, 42d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 1 (1946)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private John C. Hitchcock (ASN: 11108245), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 232d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 23 April 1945 near Dockingen, Germany. When his platoon was surprised by enemy machine gun and small arms fire, Private Hitchcock was wounded while acting as a lead scout. Despite his wound, he advanced on one machine gun position and destroyed it with grenades. Before seeking medical aid, he continued to attack until his company had secured their positions. Private Hitchcock’s extreme courage under fire was instrumental in ensuring the rapid advance of his company.
