The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Cavalry) Sydney G. B. Tennant (ASN: 0-452439), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with 42d Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 17 April 1945 at Ammendorf, Germany. Captain Tennant, Reconnaissance Troop Commander, drove under a white flag into Ammendorf to negotiate for its surrender. Unable to find the town commander, Captain Tennant told junior officers he would return for a later meeting and at 2130, the headlights of his car making him an excellent target, he drove toward the town. Stopped by enemy soldiers at the outskirts he explained his mission, was blindfolded and taken to the commander, who refused to surrender. Captain Tennant then returned to his own lines. His disregard of danger in an attempt to prevent needless loss of life reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
