The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Glen R. Gardner (ASN: 38066237), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 232d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 12 April 1945, near Kronungen, Germany. When his platoon was pinned down by enemy machine gun fire while attacking Kronungen, Corporal Gardner advanced with another bazookaman toward the enemy position. When the gunner was suddenly killed by a burst of machine gun fire, Corporal Gardner immediately loaded the bazooka, and fired directly into the machine gun nest, knocking it out. His prompt action and courage under fire thus relieved the pressure on his platoon and enabled them to advance on their objective.
