Headquarters, 42d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 50 (May 2, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Robert L. Sweeney (ASN: 31173516), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Reconnaissance Company, 692d Tank Destroyer Battalion, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 9 April 1945 near Obbach, Germany. While reconnoitering an area near Obbach, Germany, Sergeant Sweeney learned that two members of a wire crew of the 232d Infantry Regiment had been seriously wounded at an enemy road block. Joining a volunteer rescue party, he crawled 300 yards to the wounded men under intense enemy artillery, mortar, and small arms fire and with the aid of the other members of the rescue group, carried them to a sheltered position where they were given first aid. Remaining with the injured men until dusk, Sergeant Sweeney and another man brought up a vehicle and evacuated the wounded man to an aid station. His outstanding courage and unselfish devotion to duty reflect distinct credit upon himself and the military service of the United States.
