The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Lyman J. Telfer (ASN: 36592054), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 232d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 25 April 1945, near Unterbach, Germany. When the rifle company to which his heavy machine gun platoon was attached was held up by intense enemy fire and its company commander killed, Sergeant Telfer led his platoon into position in anticipation of an enemy counterattack. He then advanced to reconnoiter for more favorable positions and, though shot through the face, completed his reconnaissance, led his platoon into the new positions and refused evacuation until the following morning. By his outstanding courage and leadership Sergeant Telfer enabled his platoon to complete its assigned mission.
