The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Ray D. Summers (ASN: 35235325), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 232d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 4 April 1945 at Wurzburg, Germany. When his platoon met terrific small arms fire, Sergeant Summers exposed himself to direct enemy fire while maneuvering his men into covered firing positions. Though seriously wounded in the back while crawling from one man to another, he refused medical aid until he had directed his platoon’s fire so effectively that the enemy surrendered. Sergeant Summers’ courage and aggressive leadership enabled his platoon to capture over 70 prisoners, while suffering only two casualties.
