The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Edgar J. Bersheim (ASN: 33784056), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 232d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 4 April 1945, at Wurzburg, Germany. When four litter bearers carrying a wounded man were fired on by enemy machine guns and small arms, the litter was dropped and the wounded man exposed to the intense fire. Sergeant Bersheim, without hesitation or regard for his own safety, faced the heavy fire in the open area and dragged the wounded man to a place of safety 25 yards away. Sergeant Bersheim’s gallant action saved the life of the wounded man and helped to encourage his platoon in the action that followed.
