Headquarters, 42d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 75 (1946)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Max M. Mrotek (ASN: 36981864), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 232d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 31 March 1945, near Wurzburg, Germany. During the advance of our forces toward the city of Wurzburg, Germany, the leading elements of Company C were attacked by a strong enemy force which inflicted numerous casualties on our troops. Sergeant Mrotek, with complete disregard for his personal safety, advanced through the intense machine gun, small arms, and grenade fire to the side of one of the casualties and brought him back to a waiting truck. Then, making another trip down a fire-swept street, he carried one more of the wounded back to safety. Sergeant Mrotek’s exceptional courage and selfless determination undoubtedly saved the lives of the two men and reflect great credit upon himself and the armed forces.
