Headquarters, 42d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 87 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Robert H. LeMere (ASN: 314133309), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 1st Battalion, 232d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 21 March 1945 near Schonau, Germany. When a five-man Reconnaissance Patrol of which Private LeMere was a member came under concentrated enemy machine gun fire, four of the men were hit, including Private LeMere. Despite his wound, Private LeMere exposed himself to further hostile fire and crawled to a wounded comrade who lay helpless in the direct line of German observation and after dragging him to a place of comparative safety remained with him for three hours. Private LeMere’s heroic act was responsible for saving the life of a comrade.
