The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Alvan B. Squires (ASN: 0-1325347), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 232d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division. On 16 March 1945, near Reipertswiller, France, when his company was pinned down by intense enemy artillery, mortar, and small arms fire while attacking Hill 301, Lieutenant Squires left his position behind the 2d Platoon and in the face of enemy fire, charged up the hill shouting for his men to follow him. Inspired by his courageous leadership, in which he personally knocked out one of the enemy positions, the company advanced and took its objective. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
