The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private First Class] Norman Hill (ASN: 16148101), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company M, 3d Battalion, 232d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 18 January 1945, near Sessenheim, France. When C Company of the 411th Infantry moved through his company to attack, Sergeant Hill moved his gun to an exposed position despite heavy concentrations of enemy fire in order to give them close machine gun support. During the resulting action, he knocked out three enemy machine guns and inflicted many casualties. When Company C was forced to withdraw and leave many wounded behind, Sergeant Hill left his foxhole and made several trips forward helping to evacuate eleven of the wounded infantrymen. His gallant and courageous acts, performed without regard to personal safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Rainbow Division.
