The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Floyd W. Gilson (ASN: 36109373), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 232d Infantry Regiment, 42d Infantry Division, in action on 5 January 1945, near Kilstett, France. While leading his platoon against several enemy machine gun positions near Kilstett, France, Sergeant Gilson was severely wounded in the face during an intense concentration of mortar and artillery fire. Disregarding his wound, he continued to brave the murderous fire in order to reorganize his platoon for a withdrawal and to assist the medical aid men in caring for the other wounded. By his outstanding courage and selfless determination, Sergeant Gilson enabled his men to withdraw to safety with a minimum of casualties.
