The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Joseph B. Zywicki (ASN: 34210101), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a Medical Aidman with the 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 11 March 1944. Technician Fifth Grade Zywicki braved the hazards of a mined, fire-swept area to reach and render first aid to two wounded comrades. On the following night, Technician Fifth Grade Zywicki courageously exposed himself to both enemy and friendly fire in crawling thirty yards to aid another casualty. Again, on 15 March 1944, he displayed exemplary courage in volunteering to help carry several wounded over 100 yards of exposed terrain where the heaviest combat was taking place. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technician Fifth Grade Zywicki, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
