The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Edwin John Zurek (ASN: ER-16242440), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy 7 January 1951 in the vicinity of Wonju, Korea. In the early morning hours of 7 January 1951, Private Zurek, a machine gunner, was participating in the defense against an all-out effort by the enemy to break through his company’s defensive position. Exposed to intense hostile fire, Private Zurek after expending all ammunition for his weapon, dashed back to the rear, secured additional ammunition and immediately returned to his position where he began firing into the waves of assaulting enemy seeking to overrun his position. In the course of this action he was wounded twice but, despite his severe wounds, continued to serve his weapon, killing at least fourteen enemy soldiers and wounding many more. He fearlessly remained at his gun until he fell unconscious from shock and loss of blood, which later caused his death. His inspiring example of courage, loyal devotion to duty and self-sacrifice played a vital part in the successful accomplishment of the defensive mission of his unit. The gallantry displayed by Private Zurek on this occasion reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
