    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) William Eugene Zook, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 7th Cavalry (Infantry) Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, in action against the enemy near Yonchon, Korea, on 4 October 1951. When Company C, attacking strongly defended enemy positions, encountered heavy resistance which threatened to halt the advance, Captain Zook, the Battalion S-3 (Operations Officer), disregarding his personal safety, moved up to the lead elements. Here he continuously exposed himself to intense hostile fire while directing and instructing the men in an inspirational and aggressive manner. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Zook, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
