The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) William Morris Zimmerman (ASN: 0-53738), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 and 2 August 1952, in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. On those dates, Colonel Zimmerman was in command of an Infantry Battalion which had the mission of securing and holding Hill 266, better known as “Old Baldy”. During this action, the lines of communication were cut by an intense artillery barrage. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Colonel Zimmerman, completely disregarding the imminent danger, left his observation post, a place of comparative safety, and moved from company to company, issuing orders and helping to organize the positions. While accomplishing this feat, the area was subjected to one of the most devastating artillery and mortar barrages of the Korean War. His intrepidity in the face of danger was inspiring to his men and aided immeasurably in the success of the mission. Colonel Zimmerman’s outstanding leadership and courageous conduct reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
