Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 583 (October 8, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Corporal] Joyce H. Zimmerman (ASN: ER-52010135), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 11 and 12 September 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On 11 September during an attack on an enemy-held hill, Sergeant Zimmerman led his platoon along a concealed route into the attack. As the unit advanced it was halted by machine gun, automatic weapons, and small arms fire, with the main resistance coming from a machine gun emplacement. Sergeant Zimmerman, with complete disregard for his personal safety, armed himself with grenades and moved forward. He succeeded in destroying the enemy emplacement while inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy. He then reorganized his unit and led them forward in the attack. On the following day, as friendly units advanced towards their final objective, heavy enemy resistance forced the units to withdraw. Sergeant Zimmerman immediately moved his unit into position and led them forward, completely overwhelming the enemy forces. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Zimmerman reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
