The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Primo Angelo Zanni (ASN: US-55042707), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 2 June 1951, in the vicinity of Inje, Korea. Company A was attacking a well-entrenched enemy force on Hill 451. Private Zanni was a rifleman in a platoon which met a sudden enemy counterattack and, because forward positions were untenable, it was impossible to observe the enemy until the they reached the top of the hill. During a momentary lull, Private Zanni arranged his supply of grenades in front of him and waited for the increased volume of fire which would indicate that the enemy had again reached the top of the hill. When this moment came, he arose and began throwing his grenades. During this act he was mortally wounded but his grim determination to halt the enemy enabled him to continue until he had thrown his last grenade. Private Zanni’s gallantry and selfless devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
