The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class [then Sergeant] Richard J. Young (ASN: RA-19212954), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2nd Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Seoul, Korea, on 3 January 1951. His company was attacked by overwhelming numbers and forced to withdraw to more formidable positions. During the withdrawal he reorganized a group of confused stragglers into a squad and succeeded in directing their fire on the enemy. Realizing that the enemy was swiftly enveloping his small force he voluntarily exposed himself to the most intense enemy fire to lead his men in a gallant counterattack which succeeded in inflicting heavy casualties upon the enemy and containing the attack in his sector. Sergeant First Class Young’s courageous actions and exemplary leadership helped immeasurably to restore the broken company lines. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant First Class Young, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
