Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces, Mediterranean Theater of Operations, General Orders No. 40 (March 8, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Yutaka Kochi Yoshida (ASN: 0-1688398), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 442d Regimental Combat Team, in action against the enemy on 4 July 1944 in the vicinity of Rosignano, Italy. When several of his comrades were pinned down by enemy fire, Staff Sergeant Yoshida deliberately exposed himself to draw hostile fire, thus enabling him to locate the enemy emplacements. He then laid down covering fire while the men gained cover and until he was wounded, he performed in the same hazardous manner, locating and then directing the destruction of a sufficient number of enemy emplacements to enable his unit, which his platoon was supporting, to resume their advance. His heroic conduct, performed as the risk of personal safety, reflected great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
