The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Glen R. Yancey (ASN: RA-19312044), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 3 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea. Enemy forces emplaced a heavy machine gun on Company F’s flank and its accurate fire caused several casualties. Private Yancey’s platoon, under supporting fire, was assigned the mission to destroy the hostile weapon. The platoon made several attempts to maneuver against the emplacement, but each time was driven back by intense enemy fire. On his own initiative Private Yancey, a rifleman, suddenly dashed forward in a single-handed assault of the enemy position, firing his rifle and hurling hand grenades. Disregarding the point blank fire directed at him, he continued his fearless charge until he had destroyed the weapon and killed its entire crew. The gallantry displayed by Private Yancey reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
