The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery), [then Second Lieutenant] George W. Wymer (ASN: 0-1913406), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery B, 38th Field Artillery Battalion, (then Attached to 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment), 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 12 February 1951 in the vicinity of Chipyong-ni, Korea. On this date, during an attack on enemy positions, elements of a friendly unit were pinned down by hostile mortar and small arms fire, which inflicted numerous casualties upon friendly troops. Lieutenant Wymer, the only remaining forward observer, braved the intense enemy fire and crawled to a vantage point while carrying a SCR 536 radio with which to direct artillery fire by means of relay. Under his accurate direction, several enemy machine guns in commanding positions were completely destroyed, enabling friendly troops to reorganize. Disregarding his personal safety, he continued to direct the fire of friendly units, inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy. His courage and devotion to duty greatly aided the friendly units in securing their objective. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Wymer on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
