The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Raymond C. Wydra (ASN: RA-13297011), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, in action against the enemy on 25 April 1951, near Kapyong-ni, Korea. As Company L prepared to carry out its mission of securing an important hill mass from well-entrenched enemy forces, it was discovered that necessary communications with other organizations, also making the attack, had been disrupted. In spite of the personal danger, Sergeant Wydra volunteered to carry a vital message across a field of intense fire to a supporting unit. After delivering the message, he remained to assist them in the assault, and displaying dauntless courage, charged the enemy firing his rifle and throwing grenades. Though wounded early in the attack, he refused medical aid and continued forward until the mission was completed. This highly inspiring action and fearless devotion to duty was instrumental in boosting the morale of the unit and the securing of the objective with a minimum of casualties. Sergeant Wydra’s gallantry reflects great credit on himself and the military service.
