Wright (ASN: 0-2018624), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action in Korea. On 19 May 1951, near Pungnam-ni, Korea, an ammunition trailer of Company B accidentally caught on fire. Realizing the imminent danger that the burning ammunition might explode and ignite other trailers in the area, Lieutenant Wright quickly procured a shovel and dashing to the blazing vehicle commenced tossing dirt on the trailer. Heedless of the danger because of his close proximity to the flames, Lieutenant Wright, continued his attempt to extinguish the fire, assisted by several other men who rushed to his aid. When the blaze was put out, the vehicle was driven to an open area where he removed the smoking trailer. Lieutenant Wright’s heroic action and dauntless courage prevented the destruction of vital ammunition and vehicles, reflecting great credit upon himself and the military service.

Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 521 (November 17, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) George H. Wright (ASN: 0-2018624), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 29 September 1951 the 1st Battalion was assigned the mission of taking and securing Hill 487, defended by an estimated enemy battalion. As a result of heavy casualties inflicted on Company A, 1st Battalion, Company B was ordered to proceed through Company A and to assault the hill and Lieutenant Wright, Executive Officer of Company B, 1st Battalion, volunteered to lead the assault upon the enemy-infested hill. Disregarding the heavy enemy artillery, mortar, automatic weapons and small arms fire, and placing himself at the head of the column, he led the assaulting elements over the rugged terrain. Advancing to the last covered position, he organized his men into a skirmish line and began charging the highest peak. The enemy was overrun and the hill secured in a short period of time with a minimum of casualties within the company and heavy enemy losses. The inspirational gallantry and superb leadership displayed by Lieutenant Wright reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
