The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Charles E. Wright (ASN: 01325845), United States Army, for gallantry in action in the vicinity of Wiltz, Luxembourg on 30 December 1944. The 1st Platoon, Company K, 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division, commanded by Lieutenant Wright, was leading the attack of the company when it was stopped by heavy resistance from enemy infantrymen supported by automatic weapons and two tanks. Realizing the tanks were the greatest obstacle, Lieutenant Wright continued forward alone and disabled both tanks with a bazooka. With the tank threat removed and inspired by Lieutenant Wright’s courageous example, the 1st Platoon and the remainder of Company K moved forward in the attack to gain its objective, capture 18 prisoners, kill 20 of the enemy, and force the remainder to withdraw. The courage, devotion to duty, and disregard for personal danger displayed by Lieutenant Wright reflect great credit on himself and the armed forces of the United States.
