The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain Warren Lynn Wozencraft, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Advisory Team 3, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, I Corps. Captain Wozencraft distinguished himself by gallantry in action on 20 May 1970, while serving as Senior Advisor, 4th Battalion, 2d Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, Army of the Republic of Vietnam. The battalion advised by Captain Wozencraft was positioned at Fire Support Base Fuller, a vital installation seven miles south of the Demilitarized Zone. On this date enemy gunners began placing a heavy volume of mortar and rocket fire upon the base. Captain Wozencraft, completely disregarding his safety, repeatedly exposed himself to the barrage of hostile fire in order to direct air strikes and artillery fire upon the enemy positions. Throughout the day he moved along the perimeter of the base, advising and encouraging the Vietnamese defenders. Although wounded by enemy fire, he continued to advise and assist in the defensive operations. The expert manner in which he directed supporting fires proved instrumental in neutralizing many of the enemy positions. When he moved to an exposed position atop a bunker to obtain a vantage point from where he could direct artillery, Captain Wozencraft was mortally wounded. His valor and leadership served as a decisive factor in the defense of the fire base. Captain Wozencraft’s conspicuous gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
