Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 215 (June 24, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John N. Worthy (ASN: RA-14355445), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 17 May 1951, in the vicinity of Panmegi-ri, Korea. When his company was attacked by a numerically superior enemy force, Private Worthy, with one comrade, fought an all night rear guard action, though armed with only a rifle and a dozen grenades. Exposing himself to intense enemy fire for six hours, he wounded and killed numerous enemy troops. After bearing the brunt of the assault for the entire night, he was wounded and was finally evacuated. The gallantry displayed by Private Worthy reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
