Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 113 (December 21, 1950)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Elmer H. Wood (ASN: RA-33913725), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 22 September 1950 in the vicinity of Chogye, Korea. On that date Corporal Wood was leading a rifle squad during a tank-supported advance of his company with the objective of seizing the town of Chogye. Two miles from its objective the company was halted by heavyfire from an enemy roadblock consisting of four anti-tank guns, a 76-mm. cannon and numerous automatic weapons. quickly estimating the situation he decided to lead his squad in a flanking movement to the high ground to the right of the roadblock. As the squad moved onto the high ground commanding the roadblock they suddenly encountered approximately two squads of enemy manning two 82-mm. mortars. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Corporal Wood led his men forward in a daring charge, firing his rifle and hurling hand grenades as he advanced. The enemy were completely overrun and under the determined leadership of Corporal Wood the squad killed fourteen enemy soldiers and captured their weapons. His intrepid charge was an instrumental factor in the successful accomplishment of the mission assigned to his company. The gallantry displayed on this occasion by Corporal Wood reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
