The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Dale E. Wogan (ASN: US-55216357), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the early morning hours of 16 July 1953, in the vicinity of Choe Gung-Dong, Korea, Company C had the mission of relieving a company positioned on a strategically valuable sector of the United Nations line. As the operation was in progress, the enemy suddenly commenced an intense artillery and mortar barrage, followed by a large scale attack. Sergeant Wogan, a platoon sergeant, led his men through the heavy concentration to their positions on the main line of resistance. During the ensuing battle, an enemy grenade barrage wounded the crew of a flanking friendly machine gun. Completely disregarding his safety, he ran to the weapon and, placing it on top of the bunker, proceeded to deliver accurate, effective fire. After expending his ammunition, he hurled grenades at the enemy troops and inflicted additional casualties. Later, as he was returning to his position with additional ammunition, he mortally wounded an enemy soldier about to throw a grenade into a friendly bunker. Though alone, he continued back to his weapon and remained there throughout the night until the enemy attack had been repulsed. Sergeant Wogan’s outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
