Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 33 (February 7, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Eldridge L. Winninger (ASN: RA-19317321), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 14 September 1950 in the vicinity of Am-sin, Korea. In the early morning hours of that date he was in a battalion outpost on Hill 131 when the enemy launched a furious attack supported by heavy mortar and anti-tank fire. Displaying complete indifference for his personal safety he exposed himself to the withering enemy fire raking the hill. Firing his rifle and hurling hand grenades he remained in position and drove back the overwhelming force. Before daylight his position was once more attacked. Again fearlessly exposing himself, he intrepidly held his ground and forced the enemy to withdraw. At daylight eight enemy dead were found in front of his outpost position. The gallantry against overwhelming odds displayed by Private Winninger reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
