Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 7 (February 22, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Harry Wassmer (ASN: 12008699), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 5th Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa on 1 December 1942. Private Wassmer, despite heavy mortar, artillery, and aerial bombardment, continued firing his 155-mm. howitzer until killed by enemy shell fragmentation. As a result of his firing, a company of enemy infantry was routed. Private Wassmer’s courageous and heroic act, without regard for his own life, was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
