The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Sergeant [then Corporal] Charles L. Wing (ASN: US-56062753), United States Army, for heroic action on 8 October 1951 in the vicinity of Tondul, Korea. On this date Sergeant Wing was given the mission of leading his squad in an attack on well-fortified enemy-held positions on Hill 980. During the ensuing action, his squad encountered heavy enemy resistance and was forced to withdraw under a deadly concentration of hostile mortar and small arms fire. Sergeant Wing, with complete disregard for his personal safety, voluntarily remained behind to lay down a covering fire while his men evacuated the wounded. Despite the intense hostile fire directed at him, Sergeant Wing refused to withdraw until he was certain that all of his men had reached safety. His dauntless courage and selfless devotion to duty and comrades were an inspiration to all who observed him. The heroism in action demonstrated by Sergeant Wing is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
