Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), General Orders No. 3103 (March 2, 1970)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class Mark Steven Diorio (ASN: RA-18932521), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Diorio distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 15 February 1970, while serving as door gunner during a visual reconnaissance mission near Fire Support Base BARBARA, Republic of Vietnam. While following several recent trails, Specialist Fourth Class Diorio’s aircraft started receiving fire from an enemy bunker complex. With complete disregard for his own safety, he leaned precariously out of the aircraft in order to place accurate suppressive fire on the hostiles, enabling the pilot to make several passes and mark the positions for air strikes. Pinpointing the enemy for an infantry unit, the craft took several hits and Specialist Fourth Class Diorio was severely wounded, but he bravely continued to engage the hostiles until he passed out from his injuries. His gallant action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
