The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] Maurice A. Wilson (ASN: 0-2019829), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 30 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On that date Company K was assaulting well-fortified positions defended by a determined enemy force. Lieutenant Wilson’s platoon, advancing upon the enemy emplacements, came under intense hostile small arms and automatic weapons fire. Braving the enemy fire he was always at the most forward position of his platoon, encouraging and inspiring his men by boldly advancing into the intense fire directed at him by the enemy. Although painfully wounded in this act, Lieutenant Wilson continued to lead the attack, refusing aid for his wound. He continued in this manner, demonstrating outstanding courage and leadership, until he fell stunned by the concussion from a hostile grenade burst. Inspired by his heroism and daring, the men of his unit continued the assault until the enemy was forced to withdraw. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Wilson on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
