The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Glenn W. Wills (ASN: RA-6560187), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 31 August 1950 and 1 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea. On the night of 31 August 1950 his company’s position along the Naktong River was subjected to a powerful attack by a numerically superior enemy force. Sergeant Wills and fourteen other men were cut off and forced to withdraw to escape annihilation. Leading his group, he withdrew until, in the early morning hours of 1 September 1940, he reached a roadblock established by another battalion. Without hesitation he volunteered to lead his men and aid in manning the blocking position. At this time an anti-aircraft firing vehicle passed through the roadblock and was diverted to aid in strengthening the block. The vehicle had only one crew member left and Sergeant Wills voluntarily assumed the duties of gunner. In the ensuing engagement with the attacking enemy, he inflicted great casualties upon them. When he was no longer needed on the weapon, he led his group to a flank of the roadblock and deployed the men in defensive positions. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he exposed himself constantly to withering hostile fire as he moved among his men encouraging them and inspiring them to greater efforts. Under his gallant leadership his small group held fast, beating off repeated enemy thrusts with heavy losses. As a result of his aggressive leadership the enemy was unable to penetrate the flank defended by his force. The gallantry displayed on this occasion by Sergeant Wills reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
