The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class [then Corporal] Stanley R. Williams (ASN: RA-13349750), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 23 March 1951, near Uijongbu, Korea, the Third Platoon, while attacking Hill 155, was pinned down by intense sniper fire from the ridges to the left which were also being utilized by enemy mortar observers as they directed fire into the company headquarters and flanking elements of the unit. Sensing the seriousness of the situation, Sergeant Williams voluntarily led his recoilless rifle squad through a hail of small arms and grenade fire to an exposed position which enabled him to fire directly into the enemy. Ordering the squad to cover, he, aided by the assistant gunner, fired into the snipers’ nest and the mortar observers’ position, destroying both. He then turned his weapon toward the hostile entrenchments and fired until the ammunition supply was exhausted, at which time he led his squad in an attack on the enemy emplacements. The outstanding gallantry, aggressiveness, and leadership displayed by Sergeant Williams reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
