The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert K. Williams (ASN: 0-957979), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 23 April 1951, Lieutenant Williams and his platoon, attacking Hill 161 near Nemama-Hyon, Korea, were approaching their objective when a large group of enemy soldiers fiercely charged the unit. Wounded in the initial phase of the assault, Lieutenant Williams continued to advance, encouraging his men to annihilate the opposition and secure their objective. Forming a perimeter around the captured hill, the platoon was counterattacked by the enemy from an adjacent summit. During the battle which followed, the unit’s machine gun, protecting the right flank, was disabled and a group of enemy soldiers attempted to capture it. Lieutenant Williams, noticing this, jumped from his position and running through a vicious hail of enemy fire to the emplacement, killed four enemy soldiers in the immediate area and setting up the weapon, returned fire on the onrushing enemy. Not until the platoon withdrew, did the valiant officer receive the necessary medical attention. Lieutenant Williams’ extreme gallantry and heroic leadership reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
