The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class [then Corporal] Oleph A. Williams (ASN: RA-37824258), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 30 May 1951 in the vicinity of Inje, Korea. On that date Sergeant Williams was traveling with a service convoy when it was ambushed by a heavily armed and numerically superior enemy force. Sergeant Williams immediately left the kitchen truck in which he was riding and secured a position of cover. Then, realizing the mess sergeant had not escaped, returned through the heavy concentration of enemy fire to the vehicle. Exposed to the enemy fire he pulled his comrade, who was stunned by an exploding hostile mortar round, from the truck. While carrying him to cover, Sergeant Williams was painfully wounded, but thinking only of his comrade’s safety he continued on over the fire-swept area to the cover of several large rocks. There he partially revived the wounded man and continued on to friendly positions. His heroic and selfless consideration for his comrade although he was wounded himself, saved his comrade’s life and was an inspiration to all who witnessed his courageous deed. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Williams reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
