The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) George K. Williams (ASN: 0-1315886), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 September 1950, in the vicinity of Am-dong, Korea. On that date Lieutenant Williams, with a group of men of his company, was repairing a supply line immediately to the rear of one of the rifle companies of his battalion. The rifle company was under heavy enemy pressure, and the entire sector was under full observation of the enemy as well as intense hostile small arms, automatic weapons and mortar fire. The rifle company was running out of ammunition and was threatened with being overrun by the numerically superior opponent unless its ammunition was replenished without delay. Informed of this situation, Lieutenant Williams, with the assistance of a few men, immediately loaded a truck with ammunition and unhesitatingly guided it forward to the beleaguered unit. When the proximity of the enemy and the intensity of the hostile fire precluded any further progress by vehicle, Lieutenant Williams leaped to the ground and, running through the fire concentrated on him, carried the ammunition to the forward positions. With his helpers he then courageously joined the defending unit in its firefight. Its fire power thus bolstered, the unit succeeded in holding its ground and preventing the enemy from overrunning the friendly positions. The gallantry in action and fearless leadership demonstrated by Lieutenant Williams on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
