The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Arbery R. Williams (ASN: 0-325045), United States Army, for Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 39th Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 6 December 1950, Captain Williams voluntarily flew his unarmed liaison aircraft into an enemy encircled area at Koto-ri, Korea, to land at an airstrip being defended by troops of the 1st Marine Division. While under severe enemy fire, he successfully landed his plane and took off, after picking up two wounded Marines which he removed for prompt hospitalization. Captain Williams’ professional skill enabled him to make this mission a success despite the many hazards involved in the operation. The gallantry and daring displayed by Captain Williams reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
