The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant George Wilkerson (ASN: RA-34638878), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 24th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. Near Haman, Korea, on 23 August 1950, Sergeant Wilkerson’s battalion was heavily engaged by a strong hostile force. Although constantly exposed to intense small arms, automatic weapons and mortar fire, he moved throughout the position coordinating the assault groups, reorganizing scattered elements and directing fire on hostile emplacements. His aggressive leadership was an inspiration to his comrades and contributed materially to the accomplishment of the unit’s mission. Sergeant Wilkerson’s courage, initiative and steadfast devotion to duty are worthy of emulation and reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
